Disposable Cameras at Weddings - a Good Idea?

Are Disposable Cameras Worth it?

While it has become fairly common to put disposable cameras on guests's tables during the reception as a cheap and fun way to get candid photos of the night
the hidden financial and practical costs of disposable cameras can stack up quite quickly.

Consider this:
- Disposable cameras have to be bought. They can cost from $10 to $20 per camera.
- Disposable cameras typically have between 24 and 27 photos available. Unlike digital cameras each of these slots can only be used once (no review/delete option). This only provides 24-27 chances per camera.
- Photos from disposable cameras must be processed. The cost per roll/disposable camera is typically between $10 and $20.
- So far, in the worst case scenario, the cameras have cost about $40 each meaning each individual photo from the disposable cameras has cost over $1.
- Disposable cameras, by their very nature, also have an environmental cost. After one use they head straight to the tip.

Whilst disposable cameras can be fun, they can end up expensive and there are other options you could consider.

Most of your guests will have and bring their own digital camera with little or no encouragement. You can bet that there will be more than one of these at each table.

To take full advantage of this try the following:

- Encourage guests to bring their cameras.
- Bring a laptop with a multi-card adaptor/reader (available from most electronics stores for less than $40 i.e. less than the total cost of one disposable camera)
- Ask guests to leave you a copy of their photos on your laptop before they leave (best done during a speech from the MC).
- Have a friend on hand to help anyone who doesn't know how to give you a copy of the photos.

If you go down this path you'll be able to reap the benefits of digital cameras. In particular:
- you'll get a ton more photos
- these photos are likely to have better image quality
- Your cost per photo will drop dramatically
- You can print (and pay for) only the photos you want to print
